Disorder effects on transport near AFMquantum phase transitions

چکیده

We discuss three different scenarios recently proposed to account for the non-Fermi liquid behavior near antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum critical points in heavy-Fermion systems: (i) scattering of Fermi liquid quasiparticles by strong spin fluctuations near the spin-density-wave instability, (ii) the breakdown of the Kondo effect due to the competition with the RKKY interaction, and (iii) the formation of magnetic regions due to rare configurations of the disorder. Here we focus on the first scenario and show that it explains in some detail the anomalous temperature dependence of the resistivity observed e.g. in CePd2Si2, CeNi2Ge2 or CeIn3. The interplay of strongly anisotropic scattering due to critical spin-fluctuations and weak isotropic impurity scattering leads to a regime with a resistivity ρ ≈ ρ0 +∆ρ(T ), ∆ρ(T ) ≡ T f(T/ρ0) ∝ T √ ρ0 for sufficiently large T and small ρ0.

Surface Critical Phenomena at First-order Phase Transitions

Frequently, first-order phase transitions in solids are characterized by the coexistence of a disordered phase and several ordered phases. Near such a transition, the disordered phase may appear in the surface region of the crystal even though the bulk crystal remains in one of its ordered states. This leads to several critical effects which are characterized by critical exponents. Recent exper...

Disorder-induced resistive anomaly near ferromagnetic phase transitions.

We show that the resistivity rho(T) of disordered ferromagnets near, and above, the Curie temperature T(c) generically exhibits a stronger anomaly than the scaling-based Fisher-Langer prediction. Treating transport beyond the Boltzmann description, we find that within mean-field theory, drho/dT exhibits a |T - T(c)|(-1/2) singularity near T(c). Our results, being solely due to impurities, are r...

Studies of the Temperature-Driven Flow Lines and Phase Transitions in a Two-Dimensional Si/SiGe Hole System

We have performed low-temperature transport experiments on a Si/SiGe hole system. The measured transverse and longitudinal conductivities σxx and σxy allows us to study the magnetic-field-induced transitions in the system. In particular, we present the first study of temperature-driven flow lines in the ”anomalous Hall insulator” regime near a Landau level filling factor ν = 1.5. The ”anomalous...

بررسی اثر برخی افزودنی ها بر انتقالات فازی و رفتار حرارتی آمونیوم نیترات

Ammonium nitrate (AN) is widely used in fertilizers, civilian explosives and military explosives. Due to crystalline phase transitions and density changes of AN in the ambient conditions, its usage as oxidizer in solid propellants has some limitations as compared to ammonium perchlorate (AP). Several methods have been introduced to overcome these problems. In the present paper, the phase transi...

Cotunneling Transport and Quantum Phase Transitions in Coupled Josephson-Junction Chains with Charge Frustration

We investigate the quantum phase transitions in two capacitively coupled chains of ultra-small Josephson-junctions, with emphasis on the external charge effects. The particle-hole symmetry of the system is broken by the gate voltage applied to each superconducting island, and the resulting induced charge introduces frustration to the system. Near the maximal-frustration line, where the system i...
